The Best Time of Year to Ship a Car

Discover how seasonality affects auto transport pricing and availability.

Seasonality in Auto Transport: When to Ship for Price and Speed

Auto transport pricing behaves like airline tickets: supply, demand, and timing move the number more than any single company’s markup. A lane that costs $800 in February might quote $1,150 in late December when snowbirds flood southbound routes. Planning around seasonality can save money and reduce stress when you need a truck quickly.

Winter: Snowbird Season (October–March)

Retirees and seasonal residents move vehicles from the Northeast, Midwest, and Canada toward Florida, Arizona, Texas, and Southern California. Southbound lanes tighten capacity and raise rates from November through February. Northbound “backhaul” trips in the same period are often cheaper because carriers want loads to avoid deadhead miles.

Tip: If you are shipping north in winter, book early but expect better pricing than southbound shippers on the same corridor.

Spring and Summer: Moving Season

May through August peaks for family relocations, college moves, and military PCS orders. Suburban routes near major metros (Dallas, Atlanta, Phoenix, Denver) see higher volume. Carrier availability is generally good—more trucks are on the road—but popular lanes still spike around Memorial Day and July 4th windows.

Fall: A Balanced Window

September and early October often offer a sweet spot: summer moving rush eases, snowbird surge has not fully started, and weather is still mild in most regions. If your dates are flexible, fall can deliver solid rates and reasonable pickup windows.

Regional Weather Events

Hurricanes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, wildfire smoke in the West, and blizzards in the Plains can pause or reroute carriers. These are safety delays, not negotiable shortcuts. Build buffer days into your plans if shipping during peak storm months.

How Lead Time Interacts with Season

Booking one to two weeks ahead in normal seasons is ideal. During peak snowbird weeks, three weeks is safer for enclosed or oversized vehicles. Last-minute expedited service exists year-round but costs more when carrier boards are thin.

Practical Calendar Strategy

  • Relocating for a job? Align vehicle pickup with your housing closing, not your first day at work—transit can slip a day or two.
  • Buying a car online? Confirm seller availability before locking transport; storage fees add up if the carrier arrives early.
  • Military PCS? Coordinate with your orders window; summer PCS competes with civilian movers for truck space.

Price vs. Speed Tradeoff

The cheapest quote is not always the fastest dispatch. Seasonal demand can leave lowball quotes sitting on the board until a carrier accepts a fair rate. A realistic market price books faster and reduces cancellation risk.
